Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has ruled out a move for Florian Wirtz, despite expressing sympathy for the Liverpool midfielder as he struggles to reproduce his Bayer Leverkusen form in the Premier League.

Wirtz joined Liverpool from Leverkusen for around £116 million in the summer of 2025 after attracting interest from Bayern and Manchester City. However, the Germany international has faced difficulties making a consistent impact since moving to England.

His struggles have fuelled speculation about a possible return to the Bundesliga, but Hainer has indicated that Bayern are not considering a fresh attempt to sign him.

Hainer backs Wirtz despite Premier League struggles

Hainer praised Wirtz’s ability but admitted he was disappointed that the midfielder had yet to reach the same level he displayed in Germany.

“First of all, I think Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player, there’s absolutely no question about that,” Hainer said.

“I almost feel a little sorry for him that he hasn’t yet reached the same form in England that he had at Leverkusen, because we also need him for the German national team.”

Despite his admiration for the 23-year-old, the Bayern president insisted that the club were satisfied with their current squad and had no plans to pursue the Liverpool player.

“We have such a top-class squad, we’re incredibly happy at the moment, and therefore it’s not an issue for us,” he added.

Wirtz’s difficulties have prompted questions about his future at Anfield, with reports suggesting Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola is losing patience with the midfielder’s performances.

Scholes backs Spain move for Liverpool midfielder

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Wirtz could find a better fit in Spain, while his former team-mate Nicky Butt has suggested that a move away from Liverpool could help the German rediscover his form.

Butt argued that Liverpool might consider selling Wirtz if they could recover a substantial portion of the fee they paid for him.

“He’s a good footballer. He could go back to Germany and be a superstar. He can go to another club in Italy or something. It’s just not clicking for him at that point,” Butt said.

He compared Wirtz’s situation with former Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastián Verón, who struggled to establish himself in English football despite his technical ability.

Scholes, meanwhile, believes Spain would suit Wirtz’s style of play.

“Florian Wirtz is made for Spain. He’s just small, and he is great technically,” Scholes said.

The former England international also questioned how much longer Liverpool should wait for the midfielder to adapt, as uncertainty continues over his long-term future at the club.
