Ademola Lookman found the net in a standout individual performance, but Atletico Madrid fell to a 3-2 defeat against Real Madrid in a pulsating La Liga derby on Sunday.
Lookman’s clinical first-half finish briefly put Atletico in control, but a second-half surge led by Vinicius Junior ultimately turned the contest in Madrid’s favour.
End-to-end contest in Madrid
Real started strongly and nearly took the lead early on when Federico Valverde struck the post after a driving run. Atletico, however, capitalised on a well-worked move.
Matteo Rugeri combined with Giuliano Simeone, whose clever backheel set up Lookman for a simple close-range finish.
Madrid responded after the break when Vinicius converted from the penalty spot following a foul by David Hancko on Brahim Diaz.
The hosts then took the lead after a defensive error from Jose Gimenez allowed Valverde to continue his fine scoring run.
Vinicius seals decisive win
Atletico fought back through Nahuel Molina, who levelled with a powerful long-range strike.
However, Madrid had the final say as Trent Alexander-Arnold picked out Vinicius, who cut inside and curled home the winner.
Valverde was later sent off, leaving Madrid to defend deep, but they held strong despite late pressure, including a strike from Julian Alvarez that hit the woodwork.
The result keeps Madrid firmly in the title race, while Lookman’s performance remains a key positive for Atletico despite the defeat.
