Barcelona manager Hansi Flick says the club’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Athletic Club made their long-awaited return to the Spotify Camp Nou “incredible” as his side climbed back to the top of La Liga.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring before Ferran Torres struck twice and Fermin Lopez added a fourth, capping a one-sided performance in front of a jubilant home crowd.
‘Everything went well’
Speaking after the match, Flick said the display reflected complete tactical control.
“Everything went well. We controlled the game and scored at the right moments,” he said. “We knew they would press high with good organisation.
“We could have scored more, but Athletic are an important team. Sometimes everything clicks, and today it did.”
The German also described the significance of taking charge of his first match at the renovated Camp Nou.
“It was a special match for everyone, coaches, players, fans. It has been incredible. It hasn’t been easy, but everything went well. A clean sheet, four goals, three points. Perfect.”
Praise for Eric Garcia
Flick reserved strong praise for Eric Garcia, who excelled in midfield with Pedri and Frenkie de Jong unavailable.
“For a coach it’s fantastic to have a player like him. We trained with him in that position all week. It was clear to me that he could play there. I’m very happy with his level.”
Balde injury update
He also confirmed Alejandro Balde’s early withdrawal was precautionary.
“He’s fine. At the end of the break we had to make a decision because he had a blow to the head.”
Barcelona now look to build on their form as they make the trip to Stamford Bridge next, to face Chelsea in the Champions League.
