Solomon Ehigiator Arase was a Nigerian police officer who served from June 21, 1956, to August 31, 2025. In addition, he served as the Nigeria Police Service Commission’s chairman. In January 2023, the late President Muhammadu Buhari named him Chairman.

After Suleiman Abba was fired, Arase also held the position of 18th Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police (IGP). Before being appointed IGP, Arase oversaw the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, Nigeria’s highest intelligence collection division.

IGP Solomon Ehigiator Arase died on August 31, 2025. According to a family source, the former IGP died on Sunday morning at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, acknowledged his death in a press release on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police and expressed the Force’s condolences.

On June 21, 1956, Arase was born in Owan West Local Government, Edo State, Nigeria. He completed his undergraduate studies at Ahmadu Bello University, where he earned a degree in political science in 1980. A year later, on December 1, 1981, he was enlisted in the Nigerian Police. In addition, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Lagos and another bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Benin.

Career

Arase held a number of positions in the police force, including that of Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State. During President Olusegun Obasanjo‘s administration, Arase served as the Assistant Inspector-General in the intelligence gathering department and Principal Secretary to Tarfa Balogun, the former Inspector-General of Police, at the Louis Edet House.

He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence Academy and served in Namibia as a member of the UN peacekeeping mission. Arase was named Inspector General of Police by the Goodluck Jonathan government. The Agatu Massacre by armed herders in Benue State, Nigeria, was one of the deadliest incidents he supervised as Inspector General of Police. President Goodluck Jonathan ordered him to Agatu to assess the damage.

On June 21, 2016, Arase announced his retirement from the force. On June 21, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Ibrahim Kpotum Idris as Acting Inspector General of the Nigerian Police Force. Following his retirement from the police force, Arase was named Chairman of a Task Department tasked with carrying out Edo State’s Anti-Community Development Association Law.

Arase’s post-retirement activities included practicing law, providing security consulting services to institutions like the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the European Centre for Electoral Support, the University of Oslo’s Human Rights Centre, public speaking, research, and other academic endeavors.

He is working on a uniform protocol on investigative techniques as a member of the Geneva, Switzerland-based Committee on Prevention of Torture. On January 24, 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Arase as Chairman of the Nigeria Police Service Commission. On August 31st, the Nigerian Police Force announced his death on their Instagram page.
