Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reassured Kai Havertz about his role in the team following the arrival of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP.
The Sweden international joined the Gunners last month in a £64 million deal and scored his first goal in Saturday’s 3-0 pre-season win over Athletic Bilbao.
Gyokeres opened the scoring with a header from Martin Zubimendi’s cross before Bukayo Saka doubled the lead.
Havertz came off the bench to add a late third.
Havertz, who led Arsenal’s attack for much of last season, faces fresh competition with Gyokeres boasting 97 goals in 102 appearances during two prolific seasons in Portugal.
Arteta insists the pair can feature together or in alternative roles. “They can play together or Kai can play in different positions,” the manager said.
“It elevates the quality in the squad and gives us more options to cause problems for opponents.”
The Spaniard welcomed the scoring form of both forwards and described the competition as “a good problem to have,” adding: “I am very happy with what I see.
“Individually, there were some big performances against a Champions League opponent. It’s a good feeling.”
