Neymar Jr has revealed he was close to joining Fluminense for the FIFA Club World Cup but opted to remain at Santos as he continues his recovery from injury.

The 33-year-old made the admission in comments shared by Fabrizio Romano: “I was close to joining Fluminense for the FIFA Club World Cup, it was a serious chance.

“I decided not to proceed and stay at Santos to recover as I’m not 100% fit yet and I want to be in my best condition as soon as possible.”

The Brazilian forward returned to Santos in January following the early termination of his high-profile contract with Saudi club Al-Hilal, where he struggled with injuries.

His short-term agreement with Santos has allowed him to regain fitness, but with that deal nearing expiry, speculation around his next move has intensified.

Neymar’s father confirmed this week that talks are planned with Champions League clubs, though an extended stay at Santos remains firmly on the table.

“Yes, there are European clubs… some are competing in the Champions League,” Neymar Sr told L’Equipe. “But the Brazilian market is also interesting. We’re going to Miami to listen to clubs.”

Despite growing international interest, Neymar Sr acknowledged a continued spell at Santos could align with his son’s ambition of captaining Brazil at the 2026 World Cup.

“There’s a good chance he’ll stay at Santos. That doesn’t stop me from listening to other clubs. Neymar will decide.”

Neymar has 79 goals in 128 caps and remains determined to win a World Cup.
