Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has challenged Cole Palmer following his “bored” comments after winning the UEFA Conference League title against Real Betis.
The Blues boss urges the England international to show more initiative from the outset of matches.
Palmer reportedly expressed frustration during the final against Real Betis, claiming he was “bored” of playing backwards and sideways passes.
The forward later responded emphatically on the pitch, providing two assists as Chelsea came from behind to win 4-1.
Speaking after the Blues’ 2-0 Club World Cup win over LAFC, Maresca praised Palmer’s mentality and influence, while challenging him to maintain that level consistently.
“After the Conference League final, he said that he was quite bored receiving the ball and so he decided to do something different.
The day after the interview I said to him, ‘but you can do that since the first minute, why are you waiting so long? Why don’t you do the same after one minute?,’” Maresca said. “That’s the Cole we expect. He’s our best player and a top talent.”
Meanwhile, against LAFC, Palmer was more proactive, registering seven passes into the final third and creating one chance, though he failed to register a goal or assist.
He also attempted six shots, with five blocked and one off target, before being substituted late on.
