Chelsea have guaranteed their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic 4-1 extra-time victory over Benfica in a last-16 tie disrupted by extreme weather conditions.

Reece James opened the account just after the hour mark with a well-struck free-kick that beat Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin who has been brilliant all game.

The match was then halted with just five minutes of regular time due to severe weather conditions lasting up to two hours.

When play resumed, Angel Di Maria converted a penalty to level the score and force extra-time.

In extra time, Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni received a second yellow and was sent off.

Then after, Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kieran Dewsbury-Hall found the net, sealing a remarkable night for Enzo Maresca’s men.

The Blues now advance to the quarter-finals, where they face Brazilian side Palmeiras.
