Aston Villa’s bid for the Premier League top spot was denied as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sheffield United in a dramatic clash.
Unai Emery’s side had a strong first half and seemed hopeful to extend their impressive form this sesosn with a win.
Leon Bailey capitalized on defensive lapses from Chris Wilder’s team to score just before the hour mark.
However, Villa’s celebrations were cut short when VAR intervened to review a potential foul in the buildup.
Referee Anthony Taylor determined that Jacob Ramsey had fouled Wes Foderingham, leading to the goal being disallowed.
Despite the setback, Villa continued to push forward. However, with three minutes left, they fell behind as former player Archer netted for Sheffield United.
Although Nicolo Zaniolo salvaged a late equalizer for Villa in stoppage time with a header, the draw meant they missed out on an opportunity to claim the top spot in the league.
On the other hand, Sheffield United’s point lifted them off the bottom of the table, providing a boost for Wilder’s side, who have struggled since his return, having won just once.
The draw leaves Villa in 2nd place in the Premier League, as they now turn their attention to their upcoming fixtures, hoping to challenge Arsenal and Liverpool for the top spot.
