A lady identified as Omoya Renike has questioned the organisation of a student programme where laptops, money and bags were reportedly expected to be distributed.
Renike, in a post on X, said students were told to come to school for the programme because President Bola Tinubu and members of his administration were allegedly expected to distribute the items.
She said she arrived after 11am for a programme scheduled to begin at 10am and, after registration, the event eventually started around noon.
According to her, organisers later announced that only “nominees” were eligible to receive the laptops.
“Nominees??? You told us to come and receive laptops. Nobody told us there would be nominees. Nobody told us to submit anything. Nobody told us we needed a school letterhead explaining why we needed a PC,” she wrote.
Renike said she eventually left with a friend after learning that students who remained at the event were given table water and rice.
She also questioned the resources reportedly spent on branding and other event materials, including shirts, caps, jotters and banners, compared with the number of laptops available.
“They gave us jotters. They gave us shirts. They gave us caps. They printed all sorts of things. They spent money branding the whole event,” she said.
“But the laptops they brought? From what I could see on that table, it wasn’t even up to 50.”
Renike argued that more laptops could have been provided if some of the money spent on event materials had instead been directed towards the devices.
“I’m not even saying everybody must get a laptop. But if you’re going to announce a student laptop distribution program and gather students in school, at least make the actual laptops the main event,” she added.
She concluded by questioning how the programme appeared to change from an open invitation for students to collect laptops to a process where only selected nominees could receive them.
