Real Madrid sealed a 1-0 victory over Benfica in their Champions League knockout play-off first leg on Tuesday, but the result was overshadowed by a racism allegation involving Vinicius Junior.

The match in Lisbon was halted for around 10 minutes in the second half after Vinicius reported alleged abuse following his goal.

Referee Francois Letexier activated FIFA’s anti-racism protocol before play eventually resumed.

Incident follows opening goal

Vinicius broke the deadlock early in the second half with a curling effort into the top corner. After celebrating in front of the home supporters, tensions escalated on the pitch.

Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni approached the Brazilian during the stoppage, covering his mouth while speaking. Vinicius reacted angrily, and teammate Kylian Mbappe also became involved in the exchange.

Following protests from Madrid players, the referee paused the match. Vinicius briefly left the field and was seen speaking with Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa and Benfica manager Jose Mourinho before returning.

Madrid held on to claim the win and take a narrow advantage into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Mourinho responds strongly

Speaking after the match, Mourinho rejected suggestions that Benfica could be associated with racism.

“There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium. A stadium where Vinicius plays something happens, always,” Mourinho told Amazon Prime.

“This club, the last thing that it is, is racist,” he added. “When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way.”

Mourinho also referenced Benfica legend Eusebio in defence of the club’s history and values.

Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold backed his teammate, saying: “He has got a strong mentality. He has been subject to this a few times throughout his career and he handled it excellently.”

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Vinicius has not yet issued a public statement.

The controversy has shifted attention away from Madrid’s performance as both teams prepare for the decisive return leg next week.
