Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has announced he will leave the club this summer, bringing an end to a decade-long spell in North London.
The 33-year-old South Korean forward, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, has scored 173 goals in 454 appearances, making him one of the most prolific and beloved players in the club’s history.
Son played a crucial role in Tottenham’s 2–1 Europa League final victory over Manchester United in May, ending a 17-year trophy drought, and lifted the trophy as captain.
Speaking during a press conference in Seoul, where Spurs are currently on pre-season tour, Son described the decision as “the most difficult one I have made in my career.”
“I came to north London as a kid, a very young boy who didn’t even speak English,” he said. “Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.”
Son, under contract until 2026, has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.
While his departure date remains unconfirmed, Sunday’s friendly against Newcastle in Seoul could be his final appearance for Spurs.
New manager Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou in June, paid tribute to Son: “A true Spurs legend. One of the greatest players to play in the Premier League.
“If this is his last game, what a place to do it, in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending.”
Tottenham are scheduled to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on August 13, though Son’s exit may be finalised before then.
