Sunday Dare, a spokesman for President Bola Tinubu, has dismissed claims by former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai suggesting the opposition coalition would unseat Tinubu in 2027.
El-Rufai had made headlines for asserting that the opposition would send President Tinubu “back to Lagos” in the next general election, a claim now firmly rebutted by the presidency.
In a recent interview on Mic On Podcast aired on Saturday, Dare, who serves as the president’s special adviser on media and public communications, downplayed El-Rufai’s influence, stating that the former governor’s recent remarks are exaggerated. He stated that El-Rufai holds no greater electoral weight than any other Nigerian.
“Is El-Rufai 110 million Nigerians who will vote? How many voters does El-Rufai command? Even if he commands them, can he decide who they will cast their vote for?” Dare asked.
He emphasized that while he respects El-Rufai, equating his political standing with that of Nigeria’s entire voting population is misleading.
“I have respect for him, but this idea to equate El-Rufai with Nigeria and millions of votes is an overreach,” he said.
Dare further argued that there are politicians with more significant followings and impact on national transformation than El-Rufai.
“There are politicians who command larger votes, better influence, and are key to the transformation taking place in this country,” he stated.
He also expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s re-election chances, attributing them to the administration’s ongoing reforms and policy direction.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be re-elected in 2027, primarily because of the policies and reforms he put in place,” he added.
