Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Monterrey, thanks to an early brace from Serhou Guirassy.
The Bundesliga side held off a late charge from the Mexican outfit, ending the tournament run of Sergio Ramos and his teammates in the Round of 16.
Dortmund struck early, with Guirassy opening the scoring in the 14th minute after finishing a well-orchestrated team move.
The Guinean forward doubled the lead just ten minutes later, capitalizing on a defensive error from Rayados to put Dortmund in control by halftime.
Monterrey, however, refused to fold. Germán Berterame pulled one back with a header midway through the second half.
The Liga MX side thought they had equalized when Berterame slotted home again in the 64th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
Despite late pressure and a spirited performance, Monterrey couldn’t find a way past Gregor Kobel for a second time.
Dortmund held on to secure a 2-1 win and will now face Real Madrid in the quarterfinals on July 5 at MetLife Stadium in New York.
