Presidential aspirants under the coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC) have agreed to sign a pact committing to support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
According to LEADERSHIP Weekend, the agreement was reached in principle by the contenders as part of efforts to promote unity within the party ahead of its primary election. However, the aspirants are still expected to define what would constitute a “transparent” and fair primary process.
Former Minister of Transportation and a prominent member of the ADC coalition, Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed the development exclusively to LEADERSHIP Weekend, signalling growing coordination within the bloc.
The party’s interim national chairman, Senator David Mark, had earlier stated that the party would maintain absolute neutrality. Speaking on July 8, Mark declared that there was no preferred candidate and promised that the party would conduct a transparent and credible primary election under his leadership.
His remarks followed rising speculation and internal jostling among top members of the coalition, each angling for the party’s presidential ticket.
Former vice president Atiku Abubakar recently gave a strong indication of his ambition to return to the presidential race in 2027. While receiving a delegation of Gombe stakeholders at his Abuja residence last Saturday, he subtly hinted at his readiness for the contest. He later denied reports claiming he attended a meeting where he was urged to step down in favour of a southern candidate.
Similarly, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi reaffirmed his 2027 ambition in a recent interview. Obi made it clear that he had no intention of accepting a vice presidential slot and had not engaged in any discussions to that effect.
With heavyweight figures like Obi, Atiku, and Amaechi now linked to the ADC coalition, the pact to support a single flagbearer is seen as a crucial step toward consolidating opposition strength ahead of the 2027 presidential polls.
