The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has sanctioned one of its members, Rita Ushie, popularly known as Raye, over her viral comment about President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In March 2025, Raye expressed frustration over Nigeria’s economic hardship in a viral video, describing President Tinubu’s government as “terrible” due to the rising cost of living and accused the government of ignoring citizens’ plight.
The NYSC summoned Raye to a disciplinary panel at the orientation camp in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, where she was informed that her service year would be extended by 60 days as punishment for her comments.
Despite Raye’s apology and having only one month left in her service, the NYSC still went ahead with the sanction, sparking widespread criticism from civil rights groups and activists.
Human rights activists including Omoyele Sowore and lawyer Festus Ogun rallied behind Raye, condemning the NYSC’s actions as an attack on freedom of expression and democratic rights.
