A newlywed couple returning from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry narrowly escaped death following an accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, near Ilaje, Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in collaboration with emergency responders, rescued 18 individuals from the crash, which occurred on Saturday.
According to a statement by Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA’s General Manager, the accident involved a mini truck (AGL 22 YE) and a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF).
The LT bus reportedly suffered brake failure while travelling at high speed, leading to a collision with the truck, which had mechanical issues and was moving slowly.
Among the victims were 16 passengers seated at the rear of the LT bus, including 11 women and 5 men, who sustained significant injuries. Two passengers at the front of the bus were trapped in the wreckage, suffering severe fractures.
Emergency response teams, including LASTMA, the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASABUS), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), swiftly evacuated the injured to medical facilities. While most victims were taken to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre, those with severe fractures were rushed to Gbagada General Hospital for specialized care.
Bakare-Oki expressed sympathy for the victims, urging motorists to adhere to speed limits and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent accidents. He also highlighted LASTMA’s ongoing public awareness campaigns on road safety, particularly for commercial drivers during the festive season.
Law enforcement officers from Alonge Police Station and Lagos State Task Force operatives provided security during the rescue operation.
